So there I was happily plodding around the in the kitchen this morning as you do, we love a lazy Sunday morning in hour house! We always have the radio on in the kitchen, and Heart FM is generally our station of choice, the lovely Jenni Falconer is on Sunday mornings. One of the features talked about today was the update of the Brownies and Guides badges, Molly loves Brownies so I was quite excited to hear that there will be new badges added and new opportunities for her to learn skills, my excitement soon turned to horror when the lovely Jenni said old badges like Sewing and Crochet should be replaced with Vlogging?!
WHAT?!!!??? Jenni what were you thinking?
Whilst I agree Brownies badges need to move with the times, I do not consider Crochet or Sewing as old skills – in fact I see them as life skills! How can we encourage Brownies to get badges then tell them it’s old fashioned to learn the skill needed to actually SEW them onto their uniform?
The growth in popularity of Crochet Knitting and Sewing has been massive in recent years, I was reading an article in The Guardian the other day (oh boy my Dad would be proud if he were here I feel like a proper grown up now – I finally made it!) and was astounded by the figures – the following is taken from the article – “Market research firm Mintel reports a 12% rise in women doing some sort of needlecraft as a hobby in the last two years. A fifth of women under 45 are interested in taking up knitting and sewing, while 17% of men aged 16 to 24 are keen to try one of these pastimes” It also says that Libertys of London have increased their Haberdashery department by 25% to keep up with the surge in demand for products AND Google reports a 50% increase in people searching the term Knitting. How amazing is that? If you are interested in reading the full article you can find it here.
I think the figures above suggest that this is most defiantly not an old fashioned past time but very much a modern past time which youngsters should be taught and allowed to have the chance to enjoy.
Moving on from that I was upset with comment that it should be replaced with Vlogging?! REALLY!! Now please know, I am aware of how important technology is and want my children to learn as much as they can. Taught in the right way (which I am positive the Girl Guides of course would do) yes it is something they perhaps need to learn more about, but to suggest that should be taught over and above skills that in the long run have a positive impact on wellbeing and mental health is ludicrous! Perhaps an Internet Safety Badge might be more appropriate than a Vlogging Badge?
Knitting, Crochet and Sewing are skills for life, skills that nurture wellbeing, encourage relaxation and give a sense of pride and achievement, isn’t that more what the Brownies and Guides should be encouraging?
Jenni, I am sure your comments were not meant to cause offence, we would LOVE the chance to show you just how great Knitting and Crochet can be and would love to offer you a Crochet lesson in our shop so you can see what you are missing!
In an era where children are becoming more and more reliant on Technology in everyday life, I really believe it is vital we don’t loose these life skills and they should NEVER be seen as ‘Old Fashioned’ past times at all, they are in fact, modern and crochet in particular is totally on Trend this season Jenni, why not come down see us and find out why?!
